These blades, of different lengths, each produce a specific note when struck. The instrument is played either directly with the hands or with mallets.
This instrument has its origins in the hank drum, itself derived from the hang drum invented in Switzerland in the early 2000s. The tongue drum takes up the principle of melodic percussion while adopting a different design: the notes are produced by blades cut into the metal rather than by hammered bumps.
The different names
Several terms designate this instrument, sometimes with slight nuances:
- Steel tongue drum: the most precise name, which clearly indicates the material (steel) and the operating principle (blades/tongues)
- Tongue drum: French translation of the English term, less commonly used
- Hank drum: a term sometimes used by extension, although the original hank drum has a slightly different shape and sound.
- Tank drum: a variant derived from the name "hank drum", referring to early versions made from converted gas canisters
These names generally refer to the same type of instrument, with variations mainly relating to materials, the shape of the sound box and manufacturing techniques.
Musicians, children, therapists: an instrument for everyone
The tongue drum is truly suitable for everyone.
- Children love this instrument: it's safe, fun and naturally develops their musical sense.
- Musicians appreciate it for its ease of transport and the unique atmospheres it brings to their creations.
- Wellness professionals such as therapists commonly use it in their practice thanks to its relaxing effects.
The steel tongue drum in relaxation, meditation and musical awakening
The gentle sounds of the tongue drum instantly create a calming atmosphere. In meditation, it helps with concentration and deep relaxation. Therapists use it in relaxation sessions for its beneficial effects on stress and anxiety.
For musical learning, it is an excellent first instrument: it develops the musical ear and the sense of rhythm without technical difficulty. Its vibrations also promote better sleep and a reduction in tension, which makes it a real ally for daily well-being.
Choosing your tongue drum depends on several essential factors to consider according to your needs.
The size
Size directly influences sound and portability. 20-25 cm models are ideal for beginners and children, as they are easy to hold. 30-35 cm instruments produce deeper, lower tones, ideal for meditation or therapy sessions.
The name of notes
The number of notes typically ranges from 8 to 15. For beginners, 8 to 11 notes are more than enough and allow for a wide variety of melodies. Models with 13-15 notes are for more experienced musicians who want to explore complex harmonies.
The range
The musical scale determines the soundscape. Pentatonic scales (C major, A minor) are perfect for beginners because all the notes naturally fit together. More exotic scales like Ashakiran or Kurd bring particular musical colors for specific meditative practices.
