Just twenty years ago, the handpan was almost unknown to the general public. Today, this fascinating instrument captivates with its unique shape, ease of use, and captivating sound. But what exactly is it, and how do you choose the right one? Discover everything you need to know about this unique instrument.
Steel is worked to create an instrument shaped like a flying saucer. Two shells are joined together. The upper surface features notes represented by dimples, while the lower surface has a central hole, called a "gu," through which the sound resonates.
This musical instrument is played with the hands, gently tapping on different tuned areas. Each contact generates a harmonic sound that is both rich and soothing.
But where does it come from? It was invented in the early 2000s in Switzerland. Its construction is the result of several inspirations: the steel drum of Trinidad and Tobago, the Indian ghatam, and the gamelans of Indonesia. It also shares similar characteristics to the steel tongue drum. Thanks to its ability to create meditative and relaxing atmospheres, many experienced musicians quickly adopted it. Today, it is widely used in world music, sound relaxation practices, energy healing, and yoga workshops.
Not all models are created equal. They vary in musical range, diameter, material, and even manufacturing style.
The Scale
- The minor scale: This is the ideal choice for those seeking an introspective and emotional sound, similar to that experienced during meditation.
- The major scale: More joyful and luminous, it is perfect for upbeat pieces.
- Oriental or exotic scales: These bring a touch of mystery and originality. They appeal to experienced musicians seeking rare sounds.
Number of Notes
The most common models generally have 9 or 10 notes. They are aimed at beginners. However, some can have 10 to 15 notes, or even over 30, to satisfy the musical appetite of experienced players.
Size
- 46 to 48 cm in diameter: a compact model, both lightweight and easy to carry. It is particularly suitable for children or people with small hands.
- 53 to 55 cm in diameter: this is the most common size, as it offers a good compromise between playing comfort, rich sound, and ease of transport.
- 56 to 60 cm and larger: larger models offer more powerful bass and a fuller resonance.
Tuning frequency (pitch)
- 440 Hz: The international standard pitch, suitable for band playing and compatible with other musical equipment.
- 432 Hz: Often described as more "natural" or "harmonious," used for spiritual reasons or different musical experiences, but less compatible with other sound equipment.
Materials
There is no single "best" material: the choice depends on personal preference, playing style, and the environment in which you intend to play.
- Stainless Steel: Warm, ceramic sound, resonant, and fluid sound, requiring a certain delicacy. Perfect for slow, melodic styles, where the aim is to blend notes to create a rich and harmonious atmosphere.
- Nitrided Steel: Dryer, with a crisp and slightly more percussive attack. Ideal for musicians who favor fast, rhythmic playing.
- Ember Steel: Is a specific type of stainless steel.
Types of Handpans
Handpan types are distinguished by their arrangement and the number of notes available on the instrument. These include:
- Normal: The most common configuration. It features a central note (ding) on the upper dome, surrounded by a ring of 7, 8, or 9 notes. The diameter is generally between 53 and 55 cm.
- Mini (or Micro): With a smaller diameter (around 46 to 48 cm), it offers a reduced number of notes, often 6 or 7 plus the ding. Lightweight and easy to transport, it is also suitable for children or traveling.
- Mutant: An unconventional configuration, with additional notes between the outer ring and the ding.
- Bottom Notes: These handpans incorporate additional notes on the underside of the instrument, allowing for a wider range and the addition of new scales. Intended for advanced musicians who wish to expand their artistic expression
Although robust, this musical instrument is sensitive. To extend its lifespan, a few simple steps should be taken:
- Clean the instrument regularly with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and dust.
- Apply a special handpan oil monthly to prevent oxidation.
- Store it away from humidity and extreme temperatures.
- Use a hard carrying case to avoid shocks during travel.
Over time, the tuning of this musical instrument may become slightly out of tune. The instrument’s tuning stability strongly depends on how it is played and handled — especially on how much force is applied while playing. If the instrument is left in the sun and becomes hot, the likelihood of it going out of tune increases significantly.
This musical instrument is suitable for both beginners and experienced musicians. However, the ideal model will depend on your experience.
For a beginner, it is recommended to opt for:
- A simple scale (e.g. D-Kurd minor, nearly all Handpan online courses and workshops use the D-Kurd Minor scale)
- A limited number of notes (9 to 12 maximum)
- A tool with good sustain and ease of play
More experienced musicians will look for:
- Rare or personalized scales
- A larger number of notes
- A complex harmonic response
This device isn't limited to the musical world. Thanks to its gentle vibrations and deep resonances, it's also an excellent relaxation tool.
More and more practitioners are incorporating it into their sound healing, guided meditation, or yoga sessions. Sound acts directly on the nervous system, reducing stress, promoting concentration, and inducing a state of inner calm.
For example, during a guided relaxation session, the practitioner can play the device in the background while participants lie down with their eyes closed. The sounds create a bubble of calm, facilitating letting go and reconnecting with themselves. The experience then becomes more than just a musical moment: a true inner journey.

Great advice, Felix was able to tell me right off the bat suitable scales for my current Handpan. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to come by in person, as I also live farther away. The Handpan was super packaged in a nice wooden box and the scale fits my first pan perfectly. Thank you for the advice and fast shipping!

The Purchase price was deducted from the rental price and now I am the happy owner of a wonderful Pan!!! Super service, great communication and absolutely reliable . Despite Corona.
